The National Center for Transgender Equality has released a small portion of its findings from the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, the largest survey ever focusing on trans people. The stats are about transgender people and public bathroom access, and the information is deeply troubling. 

Of the more than 27,000 transgender people who took the survey:

• 59% of trans people avoided using public bathrooms
  
• 12% have been harassed, attacked or sexually assaulted in a bathroom in the past year 
• 31% have avoided eating or drinking so they wouldn’t have to go to the bathroom 
• 24% had their presence in a bathroom questioned 
• 9% were denied access to the correct restroom
• 8% developed a kidney infection or UTI as a result of avoiding the bathroom for these reasons

The full results of the survey will be released later this year. If this preview is any indication, the data will be really discouraging — and really important.
