Hate crimes against lesbian, gay and bisexual people are up 2.6% from last year, according to a new report from the FBI. Still, the number of hate crimes in the country overall decreased from the year before. 

Out of 6,222 hate crimes reported nationwide, half were racially motivated, while antigay crimes account for the second highest category. According to the report, 1,572 crimes (20.4%) were reported on the basis of sexual orientation. … 

A breakdown of hate crimes according to sexual orientation:

• 56.7% were victims of an offender’s anti-male homosexual bias.
• 29.6% were victims of an anti-homosexual bias.
• 11.1% were victims of an anti-female homosexual bias.
• 1.5% were victims of anti-bisexual bias.
• 1.2% were victims of an anti-heterosexual bias.

The huge, important caveat here: the FBI does not report rates of hate crimes against transgender and gender nonconforming people (though this will change when the agency begins collecting that data in 2013).

Transgender people face a disproportionate amount of discrimination and violence when compared with other LGBQ people, and still, hate crimes against trans* people frequently go unreported (or inaccurately reported). These numbers aren’t good, and I’m certain they would be even bleaker if they accounted for anti-trans* violence.
