Straight couple to Olympic officials: "We are being discriminated against because we are heterosexual"
A married couple on Australia’s Olympic shooting team have been told they can’t room together during the games, and they say they’re being discriminated against.
Russell and Lauryn Mark say that they normally room together during meets, but that they were told they had to either split up in their rooming assignments or rent a hotel room together outside Olympic Village for the Olympic games. Though different articles about this didn’t specify, it’s likely that the rules mandate that athletes room with people of the same sex.
“The stupid part of this, which I have argued to them, is that there are tons of gay couples on the Olympic team who will be rooming together,” Russell Mark told the Herald-Sun, “so we are being discriminated against because we are heterosexual.”
His wife agreed with that idea.
“I am very frustrated,” said Lauryn Mark, according to the Herald-Sun, “because in sport there are a lot of same-sex couples, and it’s OK to be partners with someone of the same sex but if you are heterosexual you are penalized.”
I am confused. What do you make of this?
(UPDATE: The shooting team manager seemed to say he would make different arrangements for them. Hum.)

They’re appropriating our struggles for an issue that isn’t really related to sexuality. It’s offensive.

Bullshit. Any couple who isn’t allowed to room together is being penalized, but they’re not being discriminated against for being hetero.

Discrimination is discrimination, even if it’s an unintended consequence. I disagree with same-sex rooming mandates in any context.

They’re there representing their country in these games, though. Can’t they just like… not have sex for a few weeks? Why is this a thing?

I think that all gender-specific housing is discriminatory. It automatically implies sex; and if happens who cares? It’s their choice.

You’re not being discriminated. ALL Olympic athletes must be in same-sex arrangements, regardless of marital status. Doesn’t matter if you’re gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, straight, pansexual, two-spirit, or asexual. Rules are rules.

There is no such thing as being discriminated against for being heterosexual. No matter what sport you play, same sexes room together. Has nothing to do with their sexuality.

As an Lgbtq community we fight for equal rights. To make our rights equal with that of heterosexuals. They should not be descriminated against. This is not a high school feild trip, they are adults and should be able to make that choice themselves
