    • First trans trial judge

The first openly transgender trial judge in the country took the oath of office on Tuesday. Victoria Kolakowski told dot429 she was thrilled when her title became official during the Superior Court of California.

She likened the experience to her own personal “It Gets Better” story and was joined by her wife and her parents at the ceremony. Guests knew this was a big deal.

“It’s been very hard as a transgender person.  We’re a community that’s chronically under- and unemployed and I’ve encountered that sort of discrimination in the past, but we’re making so much more progress now.  In terms of my career, I think part of it is hard work and perseverance, and part of it is good luck.”

Read a little more about Kolakowski at the link above.

This is great news for the transgender community and for the rest of the world. Diversity really is becoming the law of the land. I’m proud of us, particularly those in California who made this happen.

    About

GayWrites.org is a not-for-profit blog committed to fair and factual coverage of current events, media issues and cultural happenings in the LGBT community. When mainstream media doesn't tell the whole story, GayWrites seeks to fill in the gaps with the stories that might not make national headlines, covering news as accurately as possible. GayWrites highlights the rights and wrongs of LGBT media coverage, pointing out what's been done well and what could be improved, all with a sense of humor. This blog is non-partisan, pro-knowledge and pro-equality. Read up, speak up.

GayWrites does not own any of the photos, cartoons or videos displayed on this site. All writing is original unless quoted or specified otherwise. This blog is run by Camille Beredjick, a 20-something college student studying journalism, gender studies and all things gay. She likes cupcakes, books, marching bands and reading your emails - but mostly reading your emails.
