Petition: correct Dictionary.com definition of marriage

    • Majority of Iowans want to keep marriage equality

According to a new Des Moines Register Iowa Poll, a majority of Iowans oppose a potential new law that would ban same-sex marriage.

The state is considering a (currently stalled) constitutional amendment that would essentially undo the ruling that legalized marriage equality in 2009, banning marriage between people of the same sex. The poll shows that 56 percent of people oppose the ban (i.e. favor marriage equality), 38 percent support it and 6 percent aren’t sure.

Sen. Matt McCoy, D-Des Moines, the Legislature’s only openly gay member, said he senses Iowans have become more accepting of same-sex marriage since the 2009 court decision.

“I think most Iowans recognize that this issue has very little to do with them and their lives, and it certainly doesn’t impact their marriages or the way they live their lives. It is really more about allowing people to be able to commit to people they love,” McCoy said.

The article linked above seems to say there’s no way this will pass, but there’s no hurt in keeping an eye out. Come on, Iowa.

Iowa’s pretty liberal until you look at a lot people who live in Iowa. This actually surprises me a bit.
