    • Activists protest Bachmann event

At a Michele Bachmann meet and greet in Iowa this weekend, about ten protestors showed up to confront the Congresswoman’s seeming inaction on LGBT suicides.

College students waited for Bachmann to take questions at the event, and when she didn’t, they waved rainbow flags at her as she left. She didn’t acknowledge them. From the LA Times:

“I’m very opposed to a lot of her stances on social issues,” said Quentin Hill, 18, a University of Iowa student who organized the protest, bringing about 10 friends to sit among the crowd of about 40 in Bachmann’s third event of the day, where she shook hands and signed autographs.

In one area, he said, there have been 12 teen suicides in the last two years, and nine have been LGBT students. “Her congressional district has one of the highest suicide rates in the country and over and over again, she’s been addressed at events about it, and she has always beat around the bush as to why she hasn’t taken action.”

It would be simply delightful if this woman would seriously acknowledge this issue in her district, let alone do something about it. Fine, stick to your “conservative values,” but how can you justify standing idly by as kids continue to take their lives?

    About

GayWrites.org is a not-for-profit blog committed to fair and factual coverage of current events, media issues and cultural happenings in the LGBT community. When mainstream media doesn't tell the whole story, GayWrites seeks to fill in the gaps with the stories that might not make national headlines, covering news as accurately as possible. GayWrites highlights the rights and wrongs of LGBT media coverage, pointing out what's been done well and what could be improved, all with a sense of humor. This blog is non-partisan, pro-knowledge and pro-equality. Read up, speak up.

This blog is run by Camille Beredjick, a 20-something college student studying journalism, gender studies and all things gay. She likes cupcakes, books, marching bands and reading your emails - but mostly reading your emails.
